Prevent Hummingbird Window Strikes
Protect the birds you love with proven, affordable solutions.
The Problem
Window collisions are one of the top human-caused threats to birds. The scale is staggering, and hummingbirds are especially vulnerable due to their speed and flight patterns.

body weight means even low-speed impacts can be fatal
Birds hit windows because they see reflections of sky, clouds, and vegetation and perceive them as open space. Hummingbirds are particularly vulnerable because their territorial aggression often sends them flying at high speed toward reflections of themselves.
The 3-Foot / 30-Foot Rule
The single most important principle for preventing window strikes. Place feeders and bird-attracting features in one of two safe zones:
Within 3 feet
Birds leaving a feeder this close to glass cannot build enough speed for a fatal collision. Even if they hit, the impact is minor. This is the ideal distance for window-mount feeders.
Beyond 30 feet
At this distance, birds are far less likely to mistake window reflections for open flyway space. They have time to recognize the glass and change course.
Proven Solutions
Multiple effective options exist at every price point. You can combine several for maximum protection.
Critical: Treatments must be on the OUTSIDE of glass
Window strikes happen because birds see reflections on the exterior surface. Decals or films placed on the inside are obscured by those reflections and are far less effective.
| Solution | Effectiveness | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Window Decals / Stickers | Moderate | $5–15 | Must be spaced no more than 2" apart horizontally and 4" vertically. Single hawk silhouettes alone are ineffective. |
| BirdTape | High | $15–25 | Translucent strips applied in rows. Lasts 4+ years. Easy DIY installation. Highly recommended. |
| Acopian BirdSavers | High | $20–50+ | Paracord hanging in vertical lines. Custom-made per window. Very effective and unobtrusive. |
| Tempera Paint | High | $5–10 | Painted patterns on exterior glass. Cheap and effective. Washes off with rain over time. Great for kids to help with. |
| Window Screens | Very High | $20–60 | Exterior screens eliminate reflections entirely. Dual purpose: also block insects. |
| UV-Reflective Glass | Very High | $$$ | Birds see UV light humans cannot. Specialty glass appears normal to us but visible to birds. Best for new construction. |
| Bird Netting | Very High | $20–40 | Taut netting 2–3" from glass acts as a trampoline. Birds bounce off safely. Must be properly tensioned. |
Window-Mount Feeders
Window-mount feeders with suction cups are the ultimate win-win. By placing a feeder directly on your glass, you solve two problems at once:
Safety
Within the 3-foot safe zone, so even startled birds cannot build dangerous speed.
Close-Up Views
Incredible close-up views from inside your home. Watch hummingbird tongues, feather details, and behavior inches away.
Look for window-mount feeders with strong suction cups, easy-to-clean designs, and built-in ant moats. Many users find hummingbirds adjust to window feeders within a day or two.
